Tokens of Knowledge: Outline of Western Theories of the Body and the Jesuit Medical Mission

While the medical mission has been regarded by scholars as a failure in the sense that in that it seems to have had little impact on medical practice and theory, this paper argues that those who argue in this way are overly myopic. Rather than focusing on medicine narrowly defined, this paper instead widens the perspective to explore how new conceptions of human anatomy influenced visual culture.
